Introducing unique features for even more detail and accuracy from the Z8’s 45.7MP sensor, plus the ability to create and install Custom Picture Controls – all coming soon

Pixel shift gets even more detail

First up is an evolution of pixel shift shooting, with Nikon being the first in the world to combine pixel shift with focus shift or AE bracketing without the need for external accessories. This means a much faster workflow for large, highly detailed files across a range of uses and genres. Using pixel shift with focus shift allows for a more precise reproduction of textures, structures and the finest detail of intricate objects, with everything sharp from foreground to background. With pixel shift combined with AE bracketing, bright subjects are captured in high contrast without unwanted moiré that can often be caused by things such as continuous patterns in buildings. File management for pixel shift has also been improved, with the ability to create individual folders for each sequence. Also in the update, pixel shift can be enabled in self-timer mode and white balance can be locked at the first shot when [Auto] or [Natural light auto] is selected.

Create and download your own Custom Picture Controls

As part of the Z8’s firmware v.3.00, users can now create their own Custom Picture Controls in NX Studio, Nikon’s free editing software. Using Flexible Colour Picture Control in NX Studio, you can fine-tune the look you want and then download the parameters on to your camera as a Custom Picture Control. When engaged on the camera, the settings are reflected in the Live View display, allowing you to preview the results in real time and reducing time spent in post.

In-camera limiter for more accurate focusing

Firmware v.3.00 for the Nikon Z8 introduces a focus limiter that restricts focus to a selected minimum-maximum range, which achieves more accurate focus on the intended subject. This prevents the camera focusing on foreground or background objects, which is especially useful when photographing things such as swaying flowers, birds and planes.

And there’s more…

Other updates in the firmware for the Nikon Z8 include:

  • The ability to choose subject detection and subject detection areas in manual focus mode.
  • A 400% magnification option in the [Zoom on/off] in Custom Settings.
  • The patterns of focus areas available with custom wide-area AF have been increased.
  • A slow release [C15] option has been added in order to make it easier to manage shot counts, while a new [FINE] setting is available for even better image quality with high-speed frame capture+.
  • An external mic (either wired or wireless) can now be used when recording voice memos.
  • Extended dimensions for wide areas AF (expanded from 20 to 135 patterns in photo and from 12-120 patterns in video).
  • N-Log View Assist now better matches the RED Technical LUT.
  • Improved filtering and display options during image playback.
  • New presets help reduce flicker common to signage or high-frequency LEDs. Simply choose a frequency and select a corresponding shutter speed.
